Same issue, slightly different scenario:
Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit
NVidia Driver 195.36.15
Happening both when Auto-hide is turned on or off. Sometimes clicking
through the windows on the panel will start it working, but then will
break again if changing auto-hide setting.
