After rebooting the blank CD was recognised.  I exited Brasero,
installed k3b and tried it twice.  Once at auto speeds, once at 8x.  It
bombed with

I tried another machine with different hardware.  The blank CD was
detected, exited Brasero, Right clicked and burned successfully from
Nautilus (via Brasero).  The space detected again was 12.8MB.
