This is fixed, at least in my machine-and was not in Plymouth, nor the kernel.
It was some saved setting in /home/luke that the newer kernel didn't like. The
offset rendering was fixed in the last few versions of Plymouth, though it also
had first appeared with kernel 2.6.32.16 .

Apparently, when the newer video drivers hit kernel 2.6.32-16, some
saved settings in my home directory started causing X to immediately
crash and respawn, thus the flicker to black. I found this out by
accident, cloning a filesystem to a disk with a default home directory,
firing it up on the AMD-and having X start just fine, with beautiful
cursor rendering right over the image saved from Plymouth!

I then went back to my own system and set GDM to wait 10 seconds before
autologin(login redundant after having to start encrypted
filesystem)-and again, it worked fine. Direct autologin (with or without
compiz) brought the problem back, so I trashed all the hidden
directories in my home directory (default desktop) and again, X started
over Plymouth just fine. I then re-set all my themes and preference, and
found just one thing: Compiz could not be set to 4 desktops-any other
number was fine, so now I have a pentagon instead of a cube. Also, the
window buttons were now back on the right, where I prefer them anyway.

If nobody else has this problem, that's the solution-remake your home
directory configurations from scratch, until whatever one interacted in
this way with the kernel can be found. I don't have time for that job
unless this has turned into a problem affecting a lot of people-and may
not still have all the files for such testing anyway.
