Some more info: When I type startx from the rescue root prompt I get the following: (I am typing this from across the room)
/dev/sdc5: recovering journal
/dev/sdc6: recovering journal
mountall: Event failed
/dev/sdc6: clean, 427752/12214272 files, 3819951/48843616 blocks (check after
next mount)

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2

Where the "_" is the underline cursor prompt. That is the last thing that
appears. After that, the system appears to be frozen.
Alt+F1, Alt+F2 does nothing, system completely unresponsive. Not even
<CTL><ALT><DEL> works, but I can ssh into it from the other machine.
Interesting: from the ssh prompt, top shows Xorg taking 100% of the
CPU?????
Tasks: 214 total, 2 running, 209 sleeping, 3 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 13.4%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni, 86.6%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
1841 root 19 -1 76136 6680 4988 R 100 0.1 14:45.93 Xorg
I could reboot from the ssh shell.
Something else I noticed that I must have missed before:
The white dots all turn orange one at a time, then they turn white one at a
time, then they turn orange and stay stuck that way once all 5 are orange.
On a normal (non rescue) boot, running top from a ssh shell shows that
Xorg is burning up the CPU:
top - 23:22:12 up 2 min, 1 user, load average: 1.28, 0.70, 0.27
Tasks: 257 total, 2 running, 255 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
