The SIGPIPE changes concern me; I know SIGPIPE handling in and around tar has been a fiddly thing in the past, and a quick web search tells me that tar 1.23's SIGPIPE handling is thought to have a regression vs. 1.22. So this looks pretty risky to me; I would prefer a cherry pick of the high-priority fix here, as I don't think we can count on the upstream discussion of the regression to settle in time for release.
