i have the same error message on lucid (64bit) when i login gnome starts without windowmanager. when i try to run gnome-appearance-properties and set it to effects mode so that compiz starts it will start but also the gnome-appearance-properties window freezes with the 15 sec timer confirmation dialog. compiz keeps running.
