+ I installed ubuntu edgy and tried to make macbook suspend to ram following
what desrt says :
  http://desrt.mcmaster.ca/macbook.xhtml

I tried even upgrading the whole system to feisty (and using the
2.6.20-9 kernel 'cause the last one does not boot at all -- see 91940)

When the system should go to sleep the HD powers down, the screen goes
black but backlight stays ON, the sleep led does not pulse and i can't
  do anything but hard-reset.

I booted with init=/bin/bash and tried echoing "mem" > /sys/power/state
The problem is the same, and i don't get any useful output.

I can also say that old .18 kernel had a similar problem and I was able to
make it sleep disabilng the ata cdrom reader module (piix.ko).
I removed piix.ko from kernel and initrd on the .20-9 kernel, but that didn't
helped; anyway I had chance to see that kernel stuff about ata and sata changed
a lot and now there are other ata cdrom modules.. maybe they share the same
problem.

The problem comes from a clean install, and has been reported from other
users in the mactel-linux mailing list.
I have a macbook of the first generation, the processor is a simple core duo.
