The only thing I can suggest now, is to try to narrow it down. Next time this 
happen open up a terminal and type "sudo cat /dev/input/mice"; if by pressing 
mouse buttons you see an output, at least we know it really is X, otherwise it 
is the kernel/hardware.
Try also, if you can, /dev/input/mouse0 and /dev/input/mouse1 as well as 
/dev/psaux.
