Public bug reported:
Dear Ubuntu.
I was trying to help a friend to install Feisty Fawn (herd 5) and
successfully failed to do so in a Thinkpad T23 with 256MB of Memory.
With harddisk configuration like this:
1. /dev/hda1 for WinXP
2. /dev/hda2 for FAT32 Data partition
3. /dev/hda3 for Windows Server 2003
4. /dev/hda4 -> extended partition with 2 logical partitions each for linux's
root and swap mountpoints.
The problems (I think) are:
1. When using normal boot X failed to start up (The card was an old SiS
card, there should not be a problem here)
2. Booting using safe-mode graphic succeeded, but there are at least 2 problem
here:
a. Live CD took almost forever to load (well it's like 15 minutes or so...)
b. the installation procedure has never been able to complete the Partitioning
disk stage. There are at least 2 problem here also:
- First is when feisty's going to partitioning the system, a dialog of
"Scanning disk..." appear, but took about 15-20 minutes for it to finished and
show us the partition editing menus.
- When we finishes partitioning, and try to apply the changes, the not-
so-cute "Scanning disk..." dialog is re-appearing and this time, after
more than 20 minutes of waiting, we get sucked up and decided to reboot.
At this point, My friend got __very__ much disappointed by Ubuntu, and
he went to try to install open SUSE 10.2 and manage to finish the
installation without any errors and be impressed with it instead.
Me, on the other hand, being the guy who promote Ubuntu (and Linux) to
him, is feeling very ashamed of Ubuntu.
I __strongly__ suggest that you do NOT release Feisty Fawn if it is
still in the same shape as what Herd 5 CD is.
And please, put back direct installation from CD capability.
And oh ya, one more thing, please take us, the lucky people in this part
of the earth who still need to use "low-powered" computers, into account
on your mind next time you want to realease a "Linux for human being"
distribution.
I wish you all the best.
