@Chris, I think you are right. I have had this problem occurring occasionally since upgrading from Karmic to Lucid. If I click shutdown or restart on the graphics interface, it logs me out. Trying again at the bottom of the log-in screen does not work either, neither does logging back in and trying graphical shut down again. The only thing that works is shutting down from the command line.
