@Chris, I think you are right.

I have had this problem occurring occasionally since upgrading from
Karmic to Lucid. If I click shutdown or restart on the graphics
interface, it logs me out. Trying again at the bottom of the log-in
screen does not work either, neither does logging back in and trying
graphical shut down again. The only thing that works is shutting down
from the command line.

There are also occasional problems mounting other disc partitions where
I am confronted with "Unable to mount [partition name] Not authorized"
When this happens, I have noticed that the option to hibernate/suspend
is missing from my power button menu.
