I'm unable to reproduce this problem on Karmic, therefore we need more
information.

Which tool do you use to configure the printer? cups webinterface /
system-config-printer (System > Administration > Printing)?
Define "the printer", which exact make and model did you select?
Please attach a problematic PPD showing lower case a4 to this bug report.
Please run the following command on a terminal to attach some useful
information related to your printing setup to this bug report:
apport-collect -p cups 540119
