Juan do you remember which pakages were updated before the incident? Was there a kernel update? Alternatively can you upload the log for dpkg (/var/log/dpkg.log) and post the time when you did the updates?
Try to hit Control + Alt + F2 to access tty 2, and if that does not work boot in recovery mode (chosen from grub). Does the latter work for you jhansonxi? If notthing of the above works boot from a live CD to access the Log (and your data).
