At the time I was also running Eclipse on the Sun Java 6 platform. I've since had issues with this causing a lock up on Edgy (using the Java 6 from back ports).
At first I assumed the issue was because of the development status of Feisty. Since I've had the same issue on Edgy the best explanation might be that Java 6 caused the lock up on my machine that eventually led to my problem with Firefox. At the time I also pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 in order to get at the terminal to see what process was locking the machine up.
