My situation is another variation of this problem. I have an Asus gv50t,
nvidia chipset. I'll send my apport-collect data. I see a headphone
checkbox in gnome-mixer. I don't see a jack sense switch. The same is
true for alsa-mixer. I get sound in my headphone if I plug the jack in
part way. With it plugged in like that, I can mute the computer speaker
and still hear sound in my headphone. The speaker slider controls the
headphone volume. If I put the jack all the way in, both the headphone
and speaker go dead.

I just tried updating to the latest alsa source by using a ppa build,
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/unstable/ubuntu karmic main. No change.
