My situation is another variation of this problem. I have an Asus gv50t, nvidia chipset. I'll send my apport-collect data. I see a headphone checkbox in gnome-mixer. I don't see a jack sense switch. The same is true for alsa-mixer. I get sound in my headphone if I plug the jack in part way. With it plugged in like that, I can mute the computer speaker and still hear sound in my headphone. The speaker slider controls the headphone volume. If I put the jack all the way in, both the headphone and speaker go dead.
I just tried updating to the latest alsa source by using a ppa build, http://ppa.launchpad.net/ricotz/unstable/ubuntu karmic main.
