I applied Barry's workaround for bug 537610.  That seems to help, to the
extent that the Preferences work now.  It didn't even try to write zero
values into the sync daemon config like it did for him.  In the prefs I
clicked Login for good measure, and now it says "Synchronization in
progress."  There is occasional light network traffic, though that may
be my mail client.

But I still don't get an Ubuntu One option in my Internet menu, nor an
icon in the notification area, nor an entry in my Bookmarks or elsewhere
in my Places menu, nor any desktop notifications about synchronization.
That was my original problem, so maybe we should divorce this bug from
537610.

(FWIW the one ubuntuone process that was still hanging around when I
killed it as part  of the workaround was ubuntuone-login).
