This seems similar to bug #501801, but the error message is not quite
the same.
The graphical boot screen was reporting that it was fixing the file
system. Every time the interface got to 100%, it would seemingly
restart at 1%. I hit the esc key, bring up the console, and an error
message from fsck was there, repeating and repeating.
The message said something like: "filesystem needs repair, please re-run
without the -a or -p options."
I booted with the install disc, and ran fsck -y manually, which repaired
the file system (no noticeable data loss). This was on an ext4
filesytem.
The graphical boot screen should detect fsck failing like this, and
report it to the user for manual intervention or use the -y option if
that makes sense (not 100% sure of the repercussions of that).
(System details coming, reporting from a different computer, at the
moment.)
