Hi jeremy. thanks for the follow up. the ubuntu sure looked promising when I first tried it. Unfortunately the bugs below made it useless for my purposes. I resolved the problem for myself by reloading Windows XP as I could not wait for a fix. I might try your o/s again in the future. Thanks for following up.

Pushing volume and mute buttons on the keyboard makes the icons at the top of the screen show mute and unmute... or sound level 10 or something else but no sound ever comes out of the speakers.
