I am also having this kind of troubles, the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD just doesn't work. It hangs at the Ubuntu red dots, and from there on nothing happens and I have to shutdown my PC manually. I tried the daily build (lucid-desktop-i386.iso 06-Apr-2010 03:07 696M) and also ubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-i386.iso. When I shutdown my PC manually I can see this message: "(process:345): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)". I also attached a screenshot.
