Are you sure that gnome-power-manager doesn't get the button press
events, as that would surprise me? Or is it getting them and just not
changing the brightness?
Some setups still require HAL for changing the brightness, and if yours
is one of them then you will still need to run HAL - gnome-power-manager
won't be able to change the brightness without it
