Does your machine have a key to cycle between displays, e.g., LCD, external monitor, both, and back to LCD? (Fn-F7 does on my laptop, there is a little graphic of two displays....) If so, can you try cycling through and seeing if this makes any difference? Another test is to use ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to virtual console 1, then ctrl-alt-f7 to switch back to gnome. Does your screen awake on either of these? Finally, there is another test that will determine if the laptop is properly detecting the open action: In a terminal window, run the command script -f -c "lshal -m" halout then close and reopen the lid several times. If you can then wake it up with either of the tricks above, great. Otherwise, reboot*. Either way, attach the file halout to this bug report. It will contain a record of important key events, such as the fn-f7 (if that's what it is), the lid close, and perhaps a lid open. This information may make it easier to know where the problem is and what should be done about it. (*) If you need to reboot, do not run the script command in /tmp, that risks getting cleaned out at reboot. Run it in your home directory, or run it specifically as script -f -c "lshal -m" ~/halout to ensure that halout is there when you go looking for it.
