There was major rework of the 1.8 package to make it possible to install it side-by-side with the former wesnoth packages (1.6 series) and potential future branches (upcoming 1.9 branch and later stable releases). This rework is mostly finished - but not complete with respect to offering alternative handling for being able to start "wesnoth" instead of explicitly have to start "wesnoth-1.8", which also requires to add dpkg-diverts for the former unversioned wesnoth packages.
Also, the official server didn't drop the 1.6 clients yet and from what I know it isn't planned to do that too soon.
