There was major rework of the 1.8 package to make it possible to
install it side-by-side with the former wesnoth packages (1.6 series)
and potential future branches (upcoming 1.9 branch and later stable
releases). This rework is mostly finished - but not complete with
respect to offering alternative handling for being able to start
"wesnoth" instead of explicitly have to start "wesnoth-1.8", which also
requires to add dpkg-diverts for the former unversioned wesnoth
packages.

 Also, the official server didn't drop the 1.6 clients yet and from what
I know it isn't planned to do that too soon. If I'm not totally mistaken
one can even still connect with 1.4 clients to the official server, so
there is nothing to fear from that part.
