'k. I've installed Compiz via the Software Center, and voila, problem fixed. After checking out some screenshots of Metacity, I've decided to stick with Compiz. I just didn't want the bug to happen again... there was a 6 hour period there where I thought I was going to have to change the effects settings every time I logged on. Whew.
