I have solved the problem. It looks like that incremental (day-by-day) updating my installation of Lucid from Alpha 3 up to Beta 2 caused some inconsistency in configuration.
I have uninstalled (not removed) all openoffice related packages via Synaptic, then installed basic packages via Ubuntu Software Center and then added gnome integration files and language support files via Synaptic.
