I think I may have found the problem. I'm using a 64-bit installation, and when I installed flash through the Ubuntu Software Center, it installed the 32-bit version with npviewer.bin.
I uninstalled it and switched to the 64-bit .so available from adobe's website, and I haven't had this problem since (6 days now).
