Hi again I have 'fixed' the problem.
Being ever the dabbler, I fired up System Monitor and tried to stop PulseAudio - not allowed. I noticed NICE was -11. For no other reason than I thought this odd, I reduced the priority to 0, and BINGO! - sound devices are recognised - Input and Output - and sound is back. So that is what need to be fixed.
