Er, oops, apologies for the nonsensical bug. It was something else that
was causing my problem, which I now have figured out. However, there is
a good reason I thought this was a bug. Compare the following two
pages:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/java2-runtime
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/java2-runtime

The same issue exists with java5-runtime and java6-runtime. So
something fishy is going on, at least with the reporting of the package
on the website.
