It does affects me too: the Appearance settings and the countdown which checks if the video is working used to freeze right after I click the "Keep settings" button. I had to install compiz (this bug was the hint) using Synaptic to change the settings.
Even with compiz already installed, it freezed at the first time I tried to change the settings. When I retried, no options (not even the "No effects") where selected.
