Hi Bob,
Sorry for the delay.
Your analysis of dual video displays is correct, I was able to install Ubuntu
10.04 after disconnecting one of displays.
After completing installation and loading the Nvidia h/w driver was able to
attach second display and configure it correctly. nvidia-settings running as
sudo did complain when attempting to save xorg.conf but seemed to have made the
changes correctly anyway on reboot.
I disabled the raid controller during Ubuntu installation, however the issue
does not appear to be connected with this h/w as I was able to configure raid0
(stripe) after successful OS installation and the system recognized the drives
properly.
Earlier when the system failed and I
hit the reset button the following message was displayed on screen before
shutdown, note - I've taken the liberty to abbreviate.
GLib - WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)..... lots of
I/O error output ...
ThanksMalcolm

This sounds like a plymouth bug, you can try pressing alt+sysrq+k to see
if that will unlock the computer.

What type of graphics card do you have and how many displays
 do you have
attached?

** Package changed: debian-installer (Ubuntu) => plymouth (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: plymouth (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Incomplete

Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Binary package hint: debian-installer

Attempt to install Alternate Ubuntu 10.04 (Intel x86) on Intel D875PBZ
motherboard.

Installer completes the installation process but hangs at the first Ubuntu logo
screen indefinitely. No visible error messages or console output available,
none of the other terminals accessible in order to diagnose problem further.
Also no visible network activity either. Repeated process 5 times with
alternate configurations but same results.

Note:
1. This system has on-board SATA raid, however no disks were connected for this
test.
2. OS was installed on standard PATA port with a 40GB disk, system RAM 1.5GB.
3. Same problem appears with standard Ubuntu PC Desktop CD (Intel x86)
4. System has worked fine in past with Ubuntu 8.1 Jaunty which correctly
installed on a 80GB raid1 mirror.
