I've found my problem by installing the Alternate CD. The drive was registering as part of a software raid set-up, although it wasn't being used in a raid arrangement and hadn't been for several years. The Alternate CD picked this up and overcame it, but the Live CD didn't trap it. So at least I can say there's an inconsistency between the graphical and text installers!
