I am getting what I think is the same problem (but I'm on Karmic).

The OS sees the interface:

$ dmesg | grep 5300
[ 8.403967] iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: Detected Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5300AGN
REV=0x24
$ ifconfig wlan0
wlan0     Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:21:6a:xx:xx:xx
          BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

However, trying to up it produces:

$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
[sudo] password for user:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Unknown error 132

It appears to be "hard blocked" - obviously I have checked in the BIOS
that it's not disabled, and I've pressed the "enable" button.

$ rfkill list
0: hci0: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: yes

I read on a post somewhere that this is a bug in HAL, not rfkill.
