I have the same problem with the same Asus laptop, with the black screen
issue straight after booting into gnome on the live cd. A box appears in
the centre of the screen, which I assume is the ubiquity installer, then
the screen goes blank. Pressing CRL-F1 causes the backlight on the
laptop to switch off, with no response from keyboard or mouse. This is
on BETA 2
