I cannot test this further, since I need this machine for production, so cannot install Lucid Beta 2 and for instance try the mainline kernel.
However, there has been so widespread unhappiness since Xorg server 1.6, which coincided with Jaunty, that this is not a Lucid problem specifically: it has existed for more than a year now.
