I don't see anything pertinent in the log (the stack traces are just
because I wiped out all the plugins in ~/.eclipse in case it was a
plugin incompatibility problem).

The symptom of the IDE locking up hard when you mouse-hover a token to
get a popup remains. It seems to be able to open that empty workspace
without crashing now.

I don't know if it's related but my fresh download from eclipse.org also
has a problem in a similar area but DOES produce a semi-sensible error
at the console. This also occurs when assist popups happen. Instead of
the process locking up hard, it just terminates instantly.

adr...@motoko:~/eclipse$ ./eclipse
2010-04-13 16:32:33.848:INFO::Logging to StdErrLog::DEBUG=false via
org.eclipse.jetty.util.log.StdErrLog
The program 'Eclipse' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 144161 error_code 172 request_code 152 minor_code 7)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
