Dear Scott,

I am sorry to inform you that "/var" is a regular directory on the "/"
partition.

I can't understand the question "did exiting from this shell fix the issue for 
you?".
I can't do anything but in the maintenance shell, that is to say I can't do 
much, since I have no idea of how to boot the system manually.

What test do you suggest to help your diagnosis ?
Do you want me to post some of my configuation files?
