I don't know if bug #558620 is a duplicate of this then, or if that bug
fix (just released today) is what *caused* my issue.
There was a protected broken link file called .thunderbird in my home
folder, and one called .mozilla-thunderbird. I deleted both and renamed
the .thunderbird-upstream folder to .mozilla-thunderbird and it appears
to be working now.
I'll go ahead and mark this as a duplicate of the other one.
