Actually it only happens when using the live cd. I remember when I installed 
9.10 happening the same.
It only happens when I install kubuntu using the harddisk method described in 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromLinux, and when the SATA 
cdrom unit is connected, although there's no cd/dvd on it. If I disconnect the 
CD/DVD unit, the ksoftirqd process comes to normal.

Since it  happens when booting from the live cd, I can't tryout with other 
kernel, since this would require installing or rebooting.
Once kubuntu is installed, the problem disappears.
