Just an addition. After going back and looking at the behavior in Karmic and Lucid, I noticed that the cursor switches to the "waiting" circle each time the pdf scrolls by one click of the scroll wheel in lucid, whereas I only got that waiting cursor while moving from one page to the next in Karmic. Is xpdf re-rendering the entire page each time the page scrolls, which would explain the slow-down?
