Quick note about the "Tried installing the device under Karmic, unsuccessfully. This apparently is expected as the version of HPLIP does not support the device." statement of the original bug. Its still true that the hplip drivers in the karmic repo (I think 3.9.8 are the latest) dont recognise the F4580 scanner but I just tried downloading 3.10.2 from the website and installing that into Karmic and it appears to have worked ok and Xsane now sees the scanner.
