Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
The problem is that pcmanfm bails out if it can't immediately connect to HAL (reasons because the service is not already running). What it should be doing instead is continuing anyway, where it should immediately connect to HAL straight away. Once this happens, pcmanfm should function as expected. The attached patch removes the check that prevents this, if you can test it, appreciated.
