i have this problem the other way around. ubuntu (9.10) defaults my (old fashioned) 17" display to 1600x1200. i can change it to the more usable 1024x768. but after that restart is impossible. same kind of messages as mentioned afore. "drm: i810_wait_ring *ERROR* lockup" etc.
