I can confirm that the problem goes away after uninstalling Nvidia
proprietary drivers. It works like charm without the  proprietary
drivers and now I am using xserver-xorg-driver-nouveau. I suspect the
problem is very much related to ugly Plymouth due to proprietary  Nvidia
Drivers.
