Im using a laptop so I manually moved the keys around (for my eyes). Ive
been going to system->preferences->keyboard-> layouts tab and adding the
dvorak layout

to make it finally work right I replaced 'us' with 'dvorak' in the XkbLayout
section of both /etc/default/console-setup and /etc/X11/xorg.conf
note that changing xorg.conf manually causes on first gnome login an error
reporting that gnome and x keyboard settings are different and asking which
(gnome or x) settings to use. Im not sure if the above gui method for changing
gnome settings is the only way or if there is some corresponding config file.
Hope she helps.
