Public bug reported:

For the past few weeks I've been unable to install the Lucid beta on my
desktop machine; update-manager always said it was unable to "calculate
the upgrade."

Some bug-reporting work on other upgrade problems led me to the logs in
/var/log/dist-upgrade, which contained much more useful information. It
turn out that I can get the upgrade going by un-installing software-
center (and ubuntu-desktop, which depends on it—I'm sure I'll be able to
restore that later).
