Anyone happen to know when this issue first began?

Can someone try booting earlier kernels to find which are affected?
(Assuming it to be a regression in the kernel)

If it sounds more like xorg-server, try booting earlier versions of it.
There were a number of changes between April 15th and now which looked
safe when we pulled them but would be worth ruling in or out as
possibilities.
