the monitors.xml is what is written by the gnome-display-properties configuration dialog, what you described before seems to be that you managed to have the tools writting screen settings which were not working on your configuration, it would be interesting to know if those worked and stopped due to changes in your settings or the driver or if the configuration written was buggy
