May I ask what version of Thunderbird you are using?

If I'm not mistaken, if you are using Thunderbird 3.0 then you will need
Lightning 1.0. The problem is that Mozilla is not officially supporting
Lightning on 64-bit Linux operating systems at this time. Also, the
package in Ubuntu is Lightning version 0.9 which is not compatible with
Thunderbird 3. Since we are only a few days away from the Ubuntu 10.04
release, I doubt that this package will be officially updated and
supported.

I just want to also say that I have had the same problem. I'm actually
in the process of compiling the Lightning extension from source as I'm
typing this. I'll comment back here and see if it works. In the mean
time, we can try looking for a PPA with an updated version of Lightning.
If there isn't one, then maybe I'll make one. ;)
