For what it's worth, I had been running the standard download of eclipse because of the previous 503 errors. When I saw eclipse was updated today I installed the update. It worked. So I removed the downloaded version. Still worked. So I removed the .eclipse folder. I started getting the error in this bug.
Following the thread here I realized there had also been a new update of xulrunner and the older version was listed in local/obsolete by synaptic. I removed it and now eclipse works correctly.
