I keep installing updates, and this problem isn't going away, so I'm going to
try jsiebold's move and install updates from xorg-edgers. I've now updated
xserver-xorg-video-ati to version:
1:6.13.99+git20100424.b2ecd1bb-0ubuntu0sarvatt
I'll hold my breath and reboot - If this doesn't help, I'll update mesa next.
