Now running sudo hdparm -T /dev/sda yields: saturn:~ $ sudo hdparm -T /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 2152 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1078.08 MB/sec I am able to get hdparm back to ~ 6500 MB/sec if I wait for around 30 minutes. Locking the system also seems to help. I am also able to get it working faster after shutting down gdm and stopping some processes.
