Could you test this with a Live CD to see if the problem still occurs in the live session? You may want to test with the latest development release, Lucid Lynx, since it is due for release this week. You can get the file here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/
This will give us a better idea if it's Ubuntu causing the issue, or something unique to the installed version currently on your computer.
